This classic expedition to the Cordillera Real offers a magnificent setting for the mountaineer to ascend some magnificent and shapely peaks.

From La Paz we depart to Copacabana and acclimatize beside Lake Titicaca, with visits to Inca ruins and the Island of the Sun. Once acclimatized, we trek into the Condoriri area, described as “truly fairylike”; pyramidal mountains with pure snow faces, elegant ridges and fields of penitents. We warm up on Pico Austria (5100m) and Pyramid Blanca (5230m) alongside glacier training before tackling the elegant and beautiful Pequeno Alpamayo (5337m) .

We return to La Paz for a days rest before tackling Huayna Potosi (6088m), a two day ascent. For those on the 22 day trip we move to Illimani (6462m), the mountain that dominates the skyline of La Paz, a fitting climax to a fantastic expedition. Bolivia has certainly lived up to its reputation for having the most stable and reliable weather. We have always had the most wonderful weather allowing us to complete our full programme of peaks. This expedition is ideal for those who have completed a winter mountaineering course, an alpine course or an expedition such as Mera Peak or the Ecuador Volcanoes.

Insurance

It is essential for a trip of this type that you are adequately insured. When researching insurance options, please ensure the policy covers you for the following:

  • Cancellation or curtailment
  • Helicopter rescue (most insurance companies will no longer cover for ‘search and rescue’ but providing you stay with the group, they will assist with ‘rescue’)
  • Repatriation
  • The altitude that you are expected to attain
  • The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
  • Grade of trek/climb/expedition
  • Medical cover

Adventure Peaks partners with Global Rescue to offer the world’s leading travel protection services. Medical and security emergencies happen. When they do, we rely on Global Rescue to provide our clients with medical, security, travel risk and crisis response services. Without a membership, an emergency evacuation could cost over $100,000. More than one million members trust Global Rescue to get them home safely when the unexpected happens. We highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue, in particular for peaks over 7000m:

It was all amazing! (And it was my first trip, so don't know better, but it was amazing)

Bolivia is an amazing country. I loved everything about it-the people in La Paz and the mountains. The itinerary is varied as you have some sightseeing acclimatisation to start then time spent in amazing mountains. I like the idea of multiple summits, so it is not all about Monday (although built what Ilimani summit as highest point).

Returning to La Paz then heading to the mountains again is nice. Also writing of mountains (not all about one peak) I think there is great value in local leaders as it supports the country, the Alpine development and the northern mountain roots and culture.

The entire trip was an amazing experience even though I didn't make it to the summit. The local agent was very helpful in organising the helicopter and looking after me and my husband when we returned to Kathmandu. Your guide was brilliant, very knowledgeable.

Both of our guides were very friendly, helpful and responsive to have varying needs. You had an inspiring brochure but as I don't get to go climbing in places all often it would have been useful to have a bit of time to refresh skills, and also to practice under supervision of course turning into the rope.
