Snowshoeing in Bulgaria

Snowshoeing in Bulgaria

From £1,295
Altitude 2,729m Grade: T2

A snowshoeing adventure through the winter wonderland in Bulgaria's Rila and Rhodope mountains.

Snowshoeing in Bulgaria takes you to a fascinating country where east meets west, home to some surprisingly beautiful mountains which are easily accessible from the capital, Sofia. In the winter months the Rila and Rhodope ranges receive an average of 2 to 3 metres of snowfall, turning them into a fairytale winter wonderland of sparkling white snow, green pine forests and blue skies. We spend our days out in the hills using snowshoes and poles where appropriate to help us cross the deep snowfields and reach the higher slopes of the mountains. Our days out will be followed by warm evenings beside the fire in our cosy, family-run hotels tucked away in the woods, enjoying traditional Bulgarian food washed down with red wine.

Rila, the highest range in the country, offers some amazing walks and views to its alpine sceneries, pointed peaks and green valleys. The legendary Rhodope mountains, the mystical homeland of Orpheus, spread around Southern Bulgaria. The dense pine forests, amazing scenery, picturesque towns and villages, old traditions, folklore and cuisine make this place a splendid area for an adventure on snow. Winter is maybe the best season for mountaineering and snowshoeing in Bulgaria. With the right equipment (snowshoes and walking poles), a hike through the snow on the white summits of Bulgaria is an unforgettable fairy tale.

Please note supplements may apply for groups of less than 4 people.

If you would prefer a summer trip instead, why not consider Bulgaria's Rila and Pirin trek?

Insurance

It is essential for a trip of this type that you are adequately insured. When researching insurance options, please ensure the policy covers you for the following:

  • Cancellation or curtailment
  • Helicopter rescue (most insurance companies will no longer cover for ‘search and rescue’ but providing you stay with the group, they will assist with ‘rescue’)
  • Repatriation
  • The altitude that you are expected to attain
  • The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
  • Grade of trek/climb/expedition
  • Medical cover

Adventure Peaks partners with Global Rescue to offer the world’s leading travel protection services. Medical and security emergencies happen. When they do, we rely on Global Rescue to provide our clients with medical, security, travel risk and crisis response services. Without a membership, an emergency evacuation could cost over $100,000. More than one million members trust Global Rescue to get them home safely when the unexpected happens. We highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue, in particular for peaks over 7000m:
