10th January
Everyone has arrived safely and on time in Mendoza. We’ve completed our initial briefing, checks are done and now time for a meal out together. Some kit to buy/rent in the morning then we head off traveling overland into the mountains and to Penitentes.
12th January
We have arrived at Penitentes. Our food is checked, counted and packed. The team and gear is now ready for departure tomorrow! I’ll do another update by sat phone at Base Camp.
15th January
The team arrived at base camp yesterday, all the group are well and taking a rest day today while making preparations for their first trip up to Camp 1 at 4900m tomorrow.
17th January
The team had a successful trip up to camp 1 yesterday and are on another rest day today. The weather has been very calm and fingers crossed it stays that way for the rest of the trip. Tomorrow the team will move up to camp 1, where they will spend a couple of days acclimatising and establishing the second camp at Camp 3 Guanachos 5450m.
23rd January
Martin has reported in from Plaza de Mulas. The team made their summit bid yesterday. The weather pushed them to the very last day due to very high winds. Matt & Claire turned round at the Independacia Hut with Martin, Skina & Nick reached the start of the Canelletta and Alex & Sacit reached the summit with Pablo. Well done to all considering the very challenging conditions this season has been fraught with. The team will trek back to Penitentes on the 24th and should reach Mendoza that night or the 25th.
