Another cracking report from John who guided Tony on a Winter Climb of Ben Nevis. The next available date for our Winter Ben Nevis Climb is January 29th
On Sunday Tony and I went to ascend Ben Nevis, which was the main objective of his course. Tony had already covered the basic winter skills the day before, so we made good progress up the icy then snowy Pony Track, practicing our crampon use. The cloud came in around 900m, and we were glad of the gloriously rimed cairns to assist our navigation.
The summit was deep in snow, and we even had some views into the Great Glen and over Aonach Mor before we descended. A really good day, and we only saw another two groups all day!
Monday was another cold, snowy day, but again had no wind, so was wonderfully atmospheric. We chose the two munro summits of the Buachaille Etive Beag, as that allowed a start above the snow line, and avoided any rain. It also allowed us to practice some more winter skills en route, such as self-belay and various self-arrest techniques, along with boot and axe work.
We were treated to some misty but brooding views at the summits. A perfect end to a great couple of winter days.
