Most of the world’s mountains were first climbed in the Victorian era, but Mount Fuji must hold the oldest recorded 1st ascent – 663AD! Japan is an ancient country with deep-rooted traditions and I would urge a little research into etiquette before you visit.
Mount Fuji is one of the most famous peaks in the world and therefore can be extremely busy. Many people take the bus to the 5th station and walk from there, but many would say that’s cheating. It is much better (and quieter) to walk the whole Fuji-Yoshida route from it’s base. The temples are beautiful, peaceful and allow time for reflection, before you reach the bedlam of the 5th station. Walking into a tourist village halfway up a mountain can be a bit unnerving, but you can keep going and sleep high on the peak in one of the many huts. An early start is essential to reach the summit by dawn, but don’t expect to be alone!
Alongside Mount Fuji there is so much of Japan to explore including Kyoto, Hiroshima and the famed It’sukushima Shrine, using the excellent rail network.

Insurance
It is essential for a trip of this type that you are adequately insured. When researching insurance options, please ensure the policy covers you for the following:
- Cancellation or curtailment
- Helicopter rescue (most insurance companies will no longer cover for ‘search and rescue’ but providing you stay with the group, they will assist with ‘rescue’)
- Repatriation
- The altitude that you are expected to attain
- The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
- Grade of trek/climb/expedition
- Medical cover
