22nd April
The four of us are now a week into our trip and have arrived in the city of Shigatse and are now only two days away from arriving at Base Camp, where we hope to meet up with the members of the Adventure Peaks climbing parties depending on their movements up and down the mountain.
Unfortunately, our arrival in Lasha and Tibet was delayed by 24hrs because of a sandstorm which had prevented us landing at Lasha airport and flying some 700 miles further into China to Chengdu. Somewhat frustrating but we did get our first glimpse of Everest as we flew over the Nepalese / Chinese border, and this along with the sightseeing trips in and around Lasha and now the overland journey to Base Camp, which are all as part of our acclimatisation process.
Both our Nepalese and Tibetan hosts have been great, which has certainly helped us soak up the culture of both countries.
We now looked forward to that first glimpse of Everest from the ground as we move closer to Base Camp, and then after further acclimatisation what is then our ultimate goal trekking to Advanced Base Camp.
23rd April
We have continued along the Friendship Highway today, travelling through what is at times just a barren waste land. The temperature dropped considerably as we crossed the Gyamtso La Pass at 5220m and we began to encounter flurries of snow. From the pass we desended again down to the plains, although the temperature has remained low.
Our journey time is very much governed by the timed stages between police check points, and we arrived in Shegar our overnight stop around mid afternoon.
We meet up with our Nepalese crew tomorrow as we get closer to Base Camp, and can’t wait for those first views of Everest to appear, along with other great peaks within the Himalayan range.
