On 8th April the team trekked to Khare, the last village before Mera Peak base camp. They had two nights at Khare and use their acclimatisation day to walk up to 5200m on a ridge near to the village, as well as practice their fixed line skills.
Today, the team moved up to base camp at 5350m.
Today, the team got their first views of the dramatic South Face of Mera Peak.
Having spent a night at Cholem Kharka and Khola Kharka the team have now dropped down to the luxury of the tea houses at Kote. Tomorrow they will head up to Thangna.
Below are a mix of photos from Janga and David.
The temp dropped below freezing, cold for the first time about minus 3 to 5 and snowing lightly. Everyone is in good spirits and well, Guides very good, looking after us and keeping us to a sensible pace.
Today the team have trekked to Cholem Kharka. David described the route as follows "Short stiff morning walk then pleasant early lunch, lovely view and accompanied by chickens, goats and a stray dog we picked up! Stiff climb next to 3400m, then we camp at 3200". Apparently the dog has made friends with John!
The team are heading to Pangoma. This part of the route does give the feeling that you are leaving the big mountains behind as you head into the lower foothills, as can be seen by David's photo from the teahouse door this morning. However once they head up into the Hinku valley, the dramatic mountain scenery will return.
Fortunately the weather allowed the team to fly this morning and the have now trekked to Poyan. Having seen the landing strip at Lukla David was more than happy to have arrived by helicopter.
The team managed to get on a flight from Kathmandu rather than having to drive to Ramechhap, however the weather at Lukla meant the first flight had to turn around and they are now having to wait. The team are also considering a helicopter if the fixed wing flights don't operate.
Tomorrow, the team will make their flight to Kathmandu, arriving on Sunday. Weather permitting they will take the domestic flight to Lukla on Monday, where they will start their 9 day trek to Mera Peak base Camp.
Janga is a trekking guide and climbing sherpa in Nepal. He has climbed Ama Dablam, Himlung Himal, Mera peak, Island Peak, Lobuche East, Kyajo Ri, Pisang Peak, Chhulu West and has also been to 8600m on Everest.
