Mount Khuiten (also known in China as Friendship Peak) stands at 4374m in Mongolia's Altai mountain range. The borders of China and Mongolia straddle its summit, making it the highest point in Mongolia, and the Altay Prefecture in Western China.
Our journey takes us into the wild and lush landscape of the Altai mountains, where towering snow-capped peaks sit watchfully over verdant alpine pastures. We begin our trip in the bustling capital of Ulaanbaatar with a guided tour to explore its rich cultural history. From here we head South to the Bogd Khan National Park and our first acclimatization peak of Mount Tsetseguun (2256m), providing outstanding views of Ulaanbaatar.
An early morning flight takes us to the far West of Mongolia into the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Here the fertile landscape offers a stark contrast to the surrounding dry hills, and the yurts and gers of the Kazakh herdsmen dotted across the landscape provide a colourful array.
The famous Mongolian Camels (two humps) will be carrying our gear to our Base Camp on the edge of the Potaniin glacier, the longest glacier in Mongolia. Here we will rest, acclimatize and practice our glacier travel skills. Once ready we start the walk to High Camp, dropping into the glacier itself, where we travel up the centre for approximately 8km. We have several days set aside for our summit attempt of Mount Khuiten, to ensure the best weather window. On the day of the climb we will start early, with crisp snow underfoot, and make out way to the highest point of Mongolia. From the summit we look down into Russia, China and Mongolia and their diverse landscapes. The journey doesn't end here, as we also tackle the neighbouring summits of the seldom climbed Mt Nairamdal (4180m) and Malchin Peak (4037m).
Our trek out takes us to the breathtaking White River Valley, where crystal clear waters snake through the lush landscape. On our way back to Olgii we visit local Kazakh families and visit a Golden Eagle Hunter, for a cultural display of these majestic birds of prey.
The beauty of Mongolia's Altai mountains should not be underestimated, and as one of the world's last untouched wilderness it is easy to feel fully immersed in the peace and serenity of this majestic landscape.
