Scottish Guided Winter Walking

Course leader and report: Mark Riley and Graeme Whitty
Course: Scottish Guided Winter Walking

Very good weather through out the course gave Abhishek and Richard great views of Scotland in winter, probably the best weekend of the year so far!

Saturday saw us take the Gondola up onto Aonoch Mor to practice their basic winter skills before ascending steeper ground up onto Aonach an Nid. With a good weather set to hold it was decided to Tackle Ben Nevis at the earliest opportunity and the guide to client ratio allowed us to take a more interesting route and a traverse of the mountain passing the impressive North face on the way. The lads found it quite a hard slog up passed the old abseil posts out of Corrie Leis to the new Cairn at the col.

The final pull up to the summit proved less of an obstacle and although the clouds had now descended to spoil the view at least it made the summit feel more wintry.

Glorious Alpine weather and a change of venue saw us ascend Buachaille Etive Beag, one of the 3 sisters of Glencoe. Great day for photo’s and with extra time in hand we had time for extra instruction in Ice Axe skills and even build a one man snow hole!
