12th September
Di, Paul and both teams have departed and will all arrive in Delhi with time for sightseeing while Di and Paul attend an expedition briefing at the Indian Mountaineering Federation before departing for Haridwar by train. Good luck from all of us at Adventure Peaks!
14th September
Both expeditions are now in Dehli – we are remaining as one big team until the split so very social. Indian Mountaineering Federation (IMF) briefing done. We have just loaded up 50 kit bags for the bus so we are travelling nice and light. Early start tomorrow for our little train ride to Haridwar! Journey starts tomorrow ?
First thoughts on Delhi, it’s like Kathmandu but not so smoggy and on steroids. Feet haven’t touch the ground in the last 2 days because we’ve been rather busy.
15th September
Both groups left Delhi yesterday on train to Haridwar and then a bus to Rishikesh. For the next 2 days we will make our way to Ultarkashi and then onto Gangotri. Although it is ridiculously hot, all group members are doing well and are being unbelievable good at self entertaining and amazing themselves as Paul & Di catch up with the logistics of the trip.
24th September
Both our Sudarshan and Satopanth teams are at Base Camp now. Both are doing well till now and have already started to climb up and further acclimatise. So far weather has been good, with clear sky and beautiful view of mountains.
30th September
We have received a message from our Delhi agents that both our Sudarshan and Satopanth teams have now come off the mountain and returned to Base Camp. They will be waking out to Gangotri in the next couple of days. Due to the Indian government’s restriction on the use of satellite phones, we have not had any information from either team about their progress, but hope to hear soon when the leaders reach a place with a mobile signal.
6th October
Despite not summiting Sudarshan Parbet, the team reached a high point of 6010m and were rewarded with magnificent views West towards Shivling, Gangotri I,II & III and the collection of unclimbed and unnamed peaks that surrounded them. Once the mountain was cleared, the entire team returned to base camp before spending 2 leisurely days trekking back to Gangotri. A 9 hour bus trip took the team back to Rishikesh before taking the train back to Delhi the following day. With only the afternoon to enjoy the delights of Dehli, including the debriefing with the IMF, the team slowly departed in dribs and drabs for homeward International flights. This was truly an amazing journey in a very enchanting area of India.
Di Gilbert works full time as an Independent Mountaineering Instructor, based in the Cairngorm National Park. She has never had a proper job and it is unlikely that this will change now. Di has stood on the bottom of the world without falling off, she has stood on top of the world without suffering from vertigo, she has climbed the world's 7 summits and completed all 282 Munros.
