Mark has been up to Glencoe this weekend checking on conditions. A nice report and photos show how good its becoming. View all of our Scottish Winter Courses including Early Booking Discounts.
Conditions are really good in Scotland at the moment. There is snow down to about 600m meters around Glencoe and Lochaber, above which there is a mix of fresh powder, windblown snow, and hard refrozen snow where the wind has scoured the slopes. It was freezing at all levels today, with frost in the valley’s lasting into the afternoon.
There were plenty of people out enjoying the great weather today (Saturday), with climbers on routes such as Number 3 Gully Buttress, Thompsons route, Tower Ridge, Gardyloo Gully, Tower Scoop along with the all the classic grade one gully’s. A team was enjoying the Carn Mor Dearg Arete (classic grade I ridge scramble) and a number of folk walking up the Mountain Track to the summit.
After a wet night in the valley, Sunday dawned fairly dry and clear. We headed up onto the Dragons Tooth in Glencoe and were rewarded with snow right down to forest level, and the whole ridge to ourselves (apart from bumping in to a lonely snowman on the summit…). The ridge is a great grade II mountaineering route, and is currently in fantastic condition.
